China's Chemical Industry Environmental Standards Enhancement and Social Responsibility Practice

2025/3/3 13:14:48

With the deepening advancement of the "dual carbon" goals, China's chemical industry is practicing environmental responsibility with higher standards. Under the framework of the Environmental Protection Tax Law, the industry's environmental technology renovation investment increased by 28% year-on-year in 2022, forming a virtuous mechanism of "polluter pays + technological innovation". Leading enterprises have taken the lead in establishing ESG management systems. Wanhua Chemical invested 1.2 billion yuan to build the world's leading near-zero wastewater discharge facility, reducing water consumption per unit product by 40%. The industry's overall volatile organic compounds emission intensity has decreased by 52% compared to five years ago, fulfilling the emission reduction commitments of the Paris Agreement.

This transformation is supported by a multi-party governance network of social responsibility: The government has established incentive and constraint mechanisms through "environmental credit evaluation"; industry associations have formulated 62 green process standards; the public environmental research center's "Blue Map" platform has prompted over 1,200 chemical enterprises to disclose real-time emission data. Under the Belt and Road framework, Chinese chemical enterprises are exporting clean production technologies, assisting Indonesia in establishing its first EU-standard tire factory, achieving dual wins in environmental and economic benefits.

Data shows that 35% of R&D investment from top 50 enterprises is allocated to green technology innovation, cultivating revolutionary materials like bio-based polyurethane. This technology-driven environmental responsibility practice is reshaping the sustainable development paradigm of the global chemical industry chain.
